All components and instructions are available without 3D. Illustrative geometry and flow. Not a simulation.
AFTER THIS CHAPTER
  • Test shutdown, overflow and restart before planting.
  • Use a consistent daily observation route.
  • Create an operable maintenance and handover record.

01 / Commission with water first

Before adding fertilizer or plants, verify access, support, drainage and electrical installation against the equipment instructions. A full vessel is difficult to move and a mature canopy makes hidden fittings harder to reach.

Draw the complete water circuit and label valves, drains, switches and isolation points. The drawing should let another operator stop a leak and restore the intended flow without guessing.

  1. Run the system with plain water at the intended operating level. Inspect every joint and record delivered flow at each branch.
  2. Stop the pump. Verify all drain-back fits in the reservoir and no line siphons outside the system.
  3. Restart and confirm priming, distribution and any timer program recover correctly.
  4. Simulate one blocked branch in a supervised water-only test while retaining a safe overflow route. Confirm the fault can be noticed and isolated.
  5. Verify instrument calibration, spare parts, cleaning access and a plan for loss of electricity.
  6. Prepare the first crop’s measured nutrient batch and transplant only after the hydraulic checks pass.

02 / The daily crop walk

Follow the same route each time: power and water level, delivery, drains, roots, leaves, environment and records. Look at the farthest outlet and the weakest plant. Listen and smell for changes, then verify them with measurements.

Measure before adjusting. Record the actual water addition, fertilizer batch and pH product amount. A short consistent log is more useful than a long form filled out only when something goes wrong.

03 / Service without losing the map

Keep spare fittings, a compatible pump or air source where needed, and labelled tools. Photograph the working arrangement after commissioning. When a part changes, update the diagram and recheck the behavior that part controls.

Clean visible debris before disinfection. Use only products and methods appropriate to the surfaces and follow their labels for dilution, contact time and rinsing. Keep live crops away from cleaning operations.

04 / Make the system operable by someone else

Write a one-page handover with normal measured ranges, refill instructions, shutoffs, alarm response, contacts and the location of batch records. Include the last successful power-loss test.

Run a supervised handover: have another person trace the water, identify the working level and explain the response to a stopped pump. Correct the instructions where they hesitate.

FIELD QUESTIONWhat proves commissioning is complete?

Recorded functional checks under normal operation, shutdown and restart, with every branch and drain verified. A leak-free photograph alone does not demonstrate recovery or root-zone delivery.

ILLUSTRATED SYSTEM INVENTORY

Parts & buying criteria

Showing nutrient film technique. Quantities describe the teaching model. Specify real working volume, support, fittings and instruments for your installation.

01Reservoir1 · illustrated quantity+

Holds the recirculating nutrient solution. This is the common sampling and refill point for both channels.

Inspect: In cutaway view, compare the water surface with the pump intake. The drawing leaves room above the water; it does not specify a working volume.

Maintain: Record the level before adding water. Inspect the cover, clean accessible deposits and keep the intake submerged during use.

BUYING CRITERIA

Opaque, cleanable container rated by its manufacturer for the intended use; accessible lid and drain.

Supplier links can be added by the publisher. The criteria stand independently.
02Pump & supply1 · illustrated quantity+

Lifts solution from the reservoir to the channel inlets. Cyan packets indicate the direction of delivery.

Inspect: Follow the rising supply pipe and its branch to each channel. Both inlets need an observable supply.

Maintain: Disconnect power before opening the pump. Inspect its inlet screen and confirm both branches flow after reassembly.

BUYING CRITERIA

Compare the pump curve at the installed lift and pipe resistance; include service access and replacement availability.

03Growing channels1 · illustrated quantity+

Contain the shallow stream beneath the plants and guide it toward the return.

Inspect: Open the cutaway to find the channel floor beneath the roots. The slope is exaggerated for reading.

Maintain: Look along each channel for ponding, debris or an obstructing root mat; inspect the outlet before changing the pump.

BUYING CRITERIA

Removable covers, supported slope, smooth cleanable surfaces and outlets accessible with plants in place.

Supplier links can be added by the publisher. The criteria stand independently.
04Plant baskets6 illustrated · illustrated quantity+

Bridge the opening in the channel cover while allowing roots to pass through.

Inspect: In exploded view, the baskets lift above the channels. The open slats reveal the relationship between support and roots.

Maintain: Check that each rim sits securely and that roots are not pinched at transplanting or inspection.

BUYING CRITERIA

Match the basket rim and hole diameter; allow removal without damaging adjacent plants.

Supplier links can be added by the publisher. The criteria stand independently.
05Support mediumFor 6 baskets · illustrated quantity+

The illustrated expanded clay supports the seedling in its basket. The channels are not filled with aggregate.

Inspect: Select the brown pebbles and separate the basket in exploded view. Media texture is simplified.

Maintain: Remove loose particles before installation. Inspect whether the starter plug stays appropriately moist.

BUYING CRITERIA

Select a stable grade that stays in the basket; compare water retention, dust and cleaning requirements.

Supplier links can be added by the publisher. The criteria stand independently.
06Gravity return1 · illustrated quantity+

Collects channel outflow and brings it back to the reservoir without a second pump.

Inspect: Trace the low ends of both channels into the common return. Inspect the full path before assuming the circuit is clear.

Maintain: Remove obstructions and check for leaks. Test drainage with the pump off during commissioning.

BUYING CRITERIA

Removable unions, supported pipe and sufficient drain capacity under the actual installation conditions.
